LinkedIn.
I have stopped applying for jobs via your job ads.
All I got from them was rejection, pretty much no interviews and a whole heap of time wasted on filling out long applications, tailoring my cv and cover letters for each application and only receiving a generic you don’t have the skills email reply.
What am I doing instead?
Ramping up my personal branding…
Posting like a maniac…
Connecting by accident with people in my network, who knows somebody that knows somebody and can recommend me for the jobs going.
I’ve interviewed with a couple of companies and business owners this way.
Some of them I already know and am delighted to work with again on a freelance basis.
Others I don’t know at all, but have given me wonderful opportunities doing consultancy work, which I love.
Other still, have chatted to me about full-time, salaried positions.
But, I have found that I’m absolutely drawn to freelancing and consulting work.
Why? Because I’m a workaholic. I might as well get paid for all the hours I put in.
Two: I get to work on lot’s of different projects, which is something I thrive on
Three: I have nobody questioning what I’m doing in the middle of the day when the sun is miraculously shining in Copenhagen and I pop out for some exercise and fresh air.
Four: I don’t have anyone berating (or celebrating) me for working late at night. Sometimes my brain kicks in after dinner and I get a good run of work done.
Five: Did I mention I actually get paid for all the hours I put in?
This last point is crucial for me, as I have found over the years, I’ve ended up doing jobs for free for people, due to boredom kicking in. That stops now. All those hours, where sit doesn’t feel like I have anything to show for it, are gone.
Another thing about applying for salaried jobs…
They generally ask you to do a case for them.
I get that, but they’re mostly unpaid. For the same case, I could be getting paid for it… And paid a pretty decent amount for those two hours+ it took me to research, strategies and create the presentation.
And I have seen companies I have applied for jobs at, use my cases on their websites, social media and marketing activities…. Even though I didn’t get the job.
So no more full-time job applications for me. At least for now. Hopefully not ever again.
My spots are filling up quickly, send me a DM so we can have a chat about what you need help with and see if I could be the one to work with on it.
I’m open to one off projects involving digital strategy.
If you’re looking for a Consultant (otherwise known in the creative fields as a ‘freelancer’), this is what I can do:
Social media management, including all the pretty graphics, copy and engagement.
Social media strategy, deciding which channels you need to be on and why?
CMS Selection Evaluations.
SEO website evaluations and strategies.
You can see I’m heavy on the strategy, it’s what I get a kick out of doing. All that research!
